On Saturday, 27 May, the day of our annual Music on the Green celebration, Village Hall in Geldeston reopened after extensive refurbishment. Over a year more than £90,000 has been raised to repair and insulate the roof, put in new double-glazed windows, install up to date toilets (including a disabled toilet) and a state of the art kitchen.
Funds are now accumulating for Phase 2 (a redecoration of the hall’s interior, replacement of lights and heaters) but already the building, opened in 1924, is good for years to come. Many activities take place during the week – we hope that our monthly film shows will resume in September – and it can be hired, of course, for private events.
The Hall Committee would like to thank all the organisations and individuals who have contributed to the funding of this much-needed renovation:
Adnams Community Trust • Bernard Sunley • Garfield Weston • Geoffrey Watling Foundation • Karpet and Furniture Kingdom • Norfolk Community Foundation (Saracens and Norfolk Village Hall Fund) • People’s Postcode Lottery • Shelroy Charitable Trust Foundation • Trusthouse Charitable Foundation • WREN •
A legacy to the Hall from the late John Bullock, a donation from the Dowson family (whose forbears gave the land and the Hall to the village) and the Hall Committee’s own fund-raising efforts complete the list of contributors.
We’d also like to say thank-you to Janet, John and the staff at the Wherry Inn for accommodating the weekly Coffee Morning during work on the Hall, and for hosting the monthly Pub Quiz in aid of Hall funds.
