It’s 1959, and widowed Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to open up a bookshop in the sleepy seaside town of Hardborough. She struggles to establish herself in the face of the damp, the cold and considerable local apathy.
When she exposes the narrow-minded townsfolk to the best literature of the day, she finds a kindred spirit and ally in the figure of Mr Brundish (Bill Nighy). This mini-revolution also brings her fierce enemies and she crosses Mrs Gamart (Patricia Clarkson), the self-appointed doyenne of the local arts scene. …
